MOSSEL BAY NEWS – The sentencing of a Mossel Bay man found guilty on counts of animal cruelty in July this year, has been postponed yet again.

Lionel Marais, a businessman who owned the former dog breeding company, Plaaswag Boerboele, was due to be sentenced in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court today, Friday 18 October.

The sentencing was postponed to 15 November for the finalisation of the correctional supervision report.

Marais was found guilty on 10 July of violating the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962 after 68 Boerboels in various stages of neglect were removed from Plaaswag Boerboele in May 2022 by the Garden Route SPCA.

Marais’ sentencing was initially set down for 16 August, however, the matter was postponed to 18 October for the completion of a probation and correctional services report.

In court today, it was heard that the correctional officer misunderstood the date the report was due and thought the final report would be heard in court in November and not today.
